The idea behind the Hertie Gender Equality Network (HGEN) is simple: Understand the challenge. Enable the solution. Lead the change.
For the third year in a row the Hertie Gender Equality Network (HGEN) of the fellows & friends Programme and the Gender, Equality and Sexuality Club (GES) of the Hertie School of Governance will host the "Cracking the Ceiling Conference" on 6 April 2019 and an Internal Network Meeting on 7 April 2019 at the Hertie School of Governance (Friedrichstrasse 180, 10117 Berlin, Germany).
This year’s topic is: "Policy Making in the Era of Intersectionality".
The current state of world politics, namely the rise of the far-right, brings a sense of urgency to protect and promote the rights of minorities. We believe it is necessary to create a space to discuss not only gender inequality but also intersectional discrimination.
Intersectionality considers different systems of oppression, and specifically how they overlap and are compounded. Intersectionality comprehends various intertwined characteristics, such as class, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disability, among others. The Conference will mainly touch upon the gender, race and sexual orientation perspectives of intersectionality.
HGEN aims at bringing together like-minded young and senior Hertie fellows from different cultural, academic and professional backgrounds, who are interested in the topic of gender equality. We encourage both men and women interested in these topics to join and attend!
More information about HGEN
The main goals of the Hertie Gender Equality Network are:
+ Understand the challenge - Create a safe space to exchange experiences and best practices, challenging established frameworks and “thinking boxes” in a solutions-oriented manner;
+ Enable the solution - Bring successful gender equality champions to inspire and drive Hertie Gender Equality Network members to achieve their personal and professional goals;
+ Lead the change - Support members in becoming inspiring leaders, within their areas of activity and beyond.
The overarching goal of HGEN is to enable and empower its members to become trend-setters, not just trend followers.
Although we would be thrilled to greet you in person in Berlin, your participation in the HGEN weekend is not a prerequisite for becoming a member of the Hertie Gender Equality Network. If you are interested in joining the initiative, please join us in the HGEN online group.
Saturday, 6 April 2019, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - ‘Cracking the Ceiling’ Conference
The Conference will have the following structure:
10:00 - 10:30 Keynote Speech - Dr. Emilia Roig
10:00 - 10:30 Panel discussion: Intersectionality - from Theory to Practice
Dr. Emilia Roig (Center for Intersectional Justice)
Dr. Petra Ahrens (Femina Politica)
Iris Rajanayagam (Xart Splitta)
Vicky Truong (Activist)
Moderator: Dr. Basak Cali.
The panel discussion will centre around how the concept intersectionality can and has been put into practice in policymaking. In the context of the contemporary European society, which is increasingly diverse but also still largely male and white-dominated, special attention should be given to the inclusion of intersectionality in public policies. There is no one better to bring these issues to light than the people themselves. We will count on a diverse set of panelists, such as policy makers, civil society organizers, and individuals. Our objective is to understand to which extent anti-discrimination policies reflect on peoples lives.
