Dear Hertie Fellows,

As a non-profit foundation with a focus on strengthening democracy, it is important for us to openly address our own past. In recent months, there have been a number of press reports and increased attention surrounding our foundation's history. Perhaps some of you have noticed or even participated in the activities of the Her.Tietz Initiative around this topic.

In order to inform you about the concrete steps that we have taken to research the history of the Hertie Foundation, and to talk about what we know and don't know to date, we would like to cordially invite you to an info session, which will also be an opportunity to clarify any open questions. After a brief introduction by our Managing Director John-Philipp Hammersen, there will be a discussion moderated by Grzegorz Nocko. We would like to use this occasion to try out this new info session format, so that we can continue to exchange ideas with you on topics in connection with the Foundation or the fellows’ network in the future.

The name of the Hertie Foundation goes back to Hermann Tietz, who gave his nephew Oscar Tietz the funds to found a department store in Gera in 1882. From this grew a department store group that was "Aryanised" after the National Socialist takeover in 1933. In the course of this process, the "Hermann Tietz oHG" was renamed Hertie. Our founder Georg Karg took over the company’s management in 1933, initially as a staff manager, and bought it a few years later from a consortium of banks. After the war, he rebuilt the damaged company. His heirs later incorporated the company's assets into the Hertie Foundation in 1974. Today's assets of the Hertie Foundation originate from the sale of the Hertie department stores in 1998.

For those of you who would like to familiarise themselves with the topic in advance, we recommend the Spiegel Online interview with our Chairman of the Board, Frank-Jürgen Weise.
